<image:title>Blog - What if you’re a ‘Flight Enabler’ and not an ‘Empty Nester’? - Image by Harshit Suryawanshi</image:title>
<image:caption>Empty nester. It’s one of those phrases long used to describe the feeling that parents and caregivers might experience when their children leave home. The phrase itself carries undertones of loss and emptiness, of an ending. And that's ok. It is a huge period of transition for the young adult leaving as well as those left at home. Loss calls for reflection. It can be a time to acknowledge a job well done. But those words might be easier to read than to feel. I get that.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Anxiety has a way of taking over, both our mind and body. The heart races and the chest tightens. Breathing becomes shallow. There's a block in the throat, hands tremble, thoughts spin. And a feeling of sickness. For some, anxiety shows up around specific events - a presentation, a social situation. For others, it builds for no clear reason. Regardless, most of us experience it at some point.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The messiness of grief: beyond the stages - Photo by Darina Belonogova</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’ve been bereaved at any time, you may have heard about the ‘five stages of grief’. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. They’re often shared with use by well-meaning friends and family as a roadmap out of the horridness we’re feeling at that time. Perhaps you’ve sat and wondered which stage you’re in right now. And perhaps, if you're honest, these stages haven't quite fitted with what you’ve been experiencing. Some days, you might wake up and manage to get through some practical tasks. Other days, you might stand in a supermarket aisle unable to decide which washing-up liquid to buy, paralysed by the choice. Some days you feel utterly sick in the stomach, unable to eat, and waves of tears flow down your cheeks. And at other times, you want to share all the stories you have. Some days, you’re calm and at other times you feel flooded with anger and “what ifs”, bargaining with a universe that doesn’t give an answer. If this sounds familiar - if your grief feels messier, less linear, more unpredictable than the stages you’ve heard about - you are simply grieving as humans actually grieve.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why women over 50 are hiding their struggles (and why that needs to change) - Image by Patricia Palma on Unsplash</image:title>
<image:caption>A recent survey by the BACP reveals something I’ve seen across clients, friends and family: nearly two-thirds of women over 50 have struggled with their mental wellbeing since reaching midlife. And almost nine in 10 of them keep these difficulties hidden. Nearly half said they didn't want to burden others. A quarter put it down to a 'stiff upper lip' attitude towards mental health. This doesn't surprise me. And it does concern me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We’ve all said it. "I should be over this by now," or "I ought to feel grateful". These small words - should, ought, what would they think - tell us something about where we look for validation. They point to a concept central to psychological struggle: the locus of evaluation. Understanding and shifting your locus of evaluation can change everything.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Standing at the threshold: why I call my practice Limen Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>There's a Latin word that has quietly shaped how I think about therapy, about change, and about the work we might do together. The word is limen. It means threshold. A threshold - that strip of wood or stone beneath a doorway is the place you stand when you're neither fully in one room nor the other. You're in-between. At the edge of what was, and not yet quite stepped into. And this, I've come to realise, is where many of us find ourselves when we seek therapy for life transitions. Standing at a threshold. In transition. It’s that space that psychologist Dr. Vincent Deary describes as "no longer/not yet" - where the old narrative of who we are doesn't quite fit with us anymore, but the new story hasn't yet emerged (Deary, cited in BPS, 2017). This is why I've named my practice Limen Therapy. Because I believe these threshold times - these moments at the limen - are precisely when having a therapist alongside you can make all the difference.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What to expect at your first hypnotherapy session</image:title>
<image:caption>Taking the first step into hypnotherapy can feel nerve-wracking. And exciting. Perhaps it's been something you've thought about for years, or you're only now finding out about it. Many people's perceptions of hypnosis are shaped by shows they’ve seen on TV or at the theatre. Clinical hypnotherapy is not like those ‘performances’. Before our first session, we'll have 'met' briefly via Zoom or phone. We'll have asked questions and decided to book a session. I will also have sent you my Guide: “The First Session: Everything You Need to Know”. Meeting online or in-person If we’re meeting online, you’ll have my tips on how best to prepare. If meeting in-person, I'll have given you all the details about how to get to my therapy room: public transport links, parking information, and any accessibility considerations. My therapy room is designed to make you feel relaxed: a comfortable chair (and not a couch!), soft lighting, a peaceful atmosphere. I don’t play background music or light candles as I know we don’t all enjoy these the same way!</image:caption>
